sometimes the new replacement bolt kit has 2 extra locking nuts and 2 extra metal washers then your existing nut and bolt system that your replacing.and the reason is because the new tank bolt system are going in this order: Bolt head- Rubber washer under - through the inside of the tank hole - then finish with rubber washer - then nut. I believe the actual question in play here is. and does your water in your local area turn black rubber washers (also in sink faucets with rubber washers) into a pile of goo that will stain anything it touches for months?Īlright I just had to replace a leaking bolt, so just want to get some clarity on everything because by no means am I an expert.

Sometimes I would change it out and 24 hours later, you'd find a leak around the #$!!# bolt. just that this has been one of the DIY jobs I hate the worst over the years because it's been hard to get the rubber to seal around the tank bolts and not leak. Of course, most kits only have one metal washer and one nut/wingnut. I keep seeing genius DIY plumbing videos on Youtube which show the person putting the bolt down through the tank with a rubber washer under the head of the bolt and then attaching a nut and a metal washer (sometimes a rubber washer under this metal washer) directly on the bottom of the toilet tank then threading the bolt down through the toilet base and adding another metal washer on the underside of the hole in the base and finally applying a nut or wingnut to the tighten the tank to the base.
